Minaret - 2010
in collaboration with sculptor, Bryan Tedrick
A project funded by Burning Man for Black Rock City, 2010
In 2010 I created an interactive sound and light installation, to bring sculptor Bryan Tedrick’s 50 foot,
climbable steel sculpture, Minaret, to life. We were funded by Burning Man and given the prominent
keyhole position to install the Minaret. My system took in data, via microphones, light sensors
and motion detectors, from climbers on and in the sculpture. The data was used to determine the
activity of the lights, so that the climbers movement and the amount of sound they generated triggered
different “activation states” represented in the activity, intensity and color of LEDs mounted
on the exterior of the sculpture. The interior climbway was filled with sound, from electro-acoustic
stringed instruments I built and pre-recorded sounds played back through speakers.
The system is run on 8 Arduino microprocessors slaved to a master Arduino using the I2C communication protocol.
Getting I2C to communicate over the full 50 feet and between 8 slaves was a considerable succes in itself
